Living history 2013

Time for our annual living history camp out.  This year we had about 60 kids registered.  For the first time, Matt and the big boys camped out in the primitive camp.  They hung their hammocks and then camouflaged them with a canvas tarp.  You can see one of the primitive tents in the background of the first picture below.  Matt set up a tent for me and the littles to sleep in.  It's called the modern camp side, but it's far from modern!  There is no running water or bathroom.  Everyone uses the outhouse (or the woods).  We practiced our dutch oven cooking and of course had hot dogs with smores one night.  The kids had fun at their classes such as fire starting, knot tying, herbal remedies, Appalachian story telling, tomahawk throwing, bow and arrow, lotion making, broom dancing, dulcimer, etc.  The littles had fun playing in the dirt!  We enjoyed getting to know the other families better since many of these we see only at Living History Camp.  The camp takes a lot of planning, and it is mostly student run.  Each year, a 1st and 2nd in command are elected for the next year.  The kids also enjoy voting on awards, similar to superlatives each year.

The event celebrates on Saturday night with a community supper and award ceremony.  At that time, the kids elect new leaders for the next year.  This year, Joshua was honored to be voted as most gentlemanly (2nd year), he won the tomahawk throw, and he was elected to 2nd in command.

A brother/sister duo will be co-coordinating in the first place, so we look forward to working with them.  They have been involved since the beginning (9 years ago!), so we know they will have lots of experience to bring to the planning table.

The broom dance is fun each year.  The boys and girls line up on opposite sides.  A girl is given the broom, and the next two boys stand on either side of her.  She gives the broom to the boy she doesn't want to dance with and then promenades down the row of boys/girls.  The boy left holding the broom then gets to choose from the next two girls.
