Diagnosis: Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Jean was diagnosed today with inflammatory breast cancer. She has an appointment with an oncologist on Monday in Gainesville and another one on Wednesday at Emory. We are also looking into a cancer center in Houston that specializes in IBC. We don't yet know the course of treatment, but I'll keep you all updated as we travel this path. Please remember us all in your prayers, and spread the message that just because there isn't a lump, it doesn't mean that it isn't cancer.

From the Susan G. Komen website: One type of locally advanced breast cancer that is rare but aggressive is inflammatory breast cancer. It is called inflammatory breast cancer because its main symptoms are swelling and redness of the breast, which mimic inflammation. Because of the symptoms and the frequent lack of a breast lump, some health care providers may treat inflammatory breast cancer first as an infection. Only when the symptoms do not improve after antibiotics is the breast cancer diagnosed.
